I was reading through my recent posts and realized that I have been a bit single-minded lately. It seems the need to explain why conservatives should not sit out the election has made my recent posts a bit monotonous.
So, to shake things up a bit, over the weekend I hope to post two longer, and less topical posts.
First, I intend to discuss where government goes wrong. I plan to show those things government tries to do but fails, and explain why. And, to be fair, I will also examine the few areas in which government is the appropriate solution. Finally, I hope to examine the differences between the two groups and explain how we can tell what is an appropriate function for the state and what is not.
I expect for many readers a lot of this will just be a rehash of things they already know, but I hope that everyone will find at least one or two interesting ideas, or at least a novel example. We shall see once I finish.
My second essay will build on the first. As the first essay examines what government should and should not do, the second will explain how to get there.
As anyone who has read this blog knows, my current belief is that federalism represents the only viable route to any meaningful reform. Before I got distracted by this flight from the Republican Party,. I was writing a number of essays on federalism, and kept promising a comprehensive description of the benefits and costs of federalism, and the reasons I feel it is the only way we will ever return control of the government to the citizens rather than the professional political class (career politicians, bureaucrats, lobbyists, lawyers, the media, etc.) and restore individual liberties. As I never got around to writing this promised essay, I intend to do so now. Much of it will just be a compilation of previous arguments and examples, but I do intend to put in some new material as well, so, even for my handful of regular readers, it should not prove boring.
Beyond those two essays, I have no firm plans. As usual, I will write on whatever topic strikes my fancy. I do have a few vague ideas that I hope to expand at some future date (why people think primitive or alien cultures will hold enlightenment; comparing Bush's "fascism" to the real deal under Castro; comparing Israel and the Palestinian Authority's records, especially on human rights) but I don't know when, or even if, they will be completed, so no promises on those.
Having summarized, as best I can, my plans for the immediate future, I would like to give thanks to everyone for their interest in my site. Your comments, positive and negative, have kept me writing whenever I doubt that anyone is reading what I post. I am truly grateful that you have all taken the time to listen to my thoughts, and I hope you have found the time well spent. I only hope I can continue to write essays worth reading.
