Getting Closer

I watched some of the coverage of the Petraeus hearings, and, while watching, I realized that eventually, given enough time and hard work on the part of our troops, the Democrats will eventually be right. Well, half-right. But that is as good as most Democrats get, so I will grade on a curve and call it getting things right.

You see, the Democrats continue to call for withdrawal, as they have been doing since the first boot touched Iraqi soil*. My thought is, if we continue with our efforts at pacifying hostile forces, excluding foreign fighters, and building up alliances in Iraq, sooner or later we will have a stable situation which will allow our withdrawal.

At that point, the Democrat calls for withdrawal will finally make sense.

Of course, they will still be wrong in their repeated claims that we have "lost" Iraq**, but at least they will finally be right that we can bring our troops home. Well, provided we ignore the fact that, had we listened to their hundreds of earlier calls for withdrawal we would never have achieved what we did in Iraq.

But we can ignore those little errors, just to have one of those rare days where the Democrats are actually right.

--------------------------------------------

* Just an aside, but I love how so many Democrats rewrite the past and say they are against fighting in Iraq, but always supported fighting "al Qaida" in Afghanistan. I seem to recall Democrats being ardently opposed to military action in Afghanistan when that conflict started. They trotted out the q-word (quagmire), called Afghanistan the next Viet Nam, and predicted failure. Until we invaded Iraq, then they were suddenly behind our mission in Afghanistan and Iraq became the quagmire/next Viet Nam. (And somehow al Qaida in Iraq ceased to be al Qaida, which apparently only exists in Afghanistan -- and Pakistan when Obama wants to invade that nation.)

** It must rankle the Demcorats that, despite constantly telling us we have lost in Iraq, not enough people are listening to force a loss. After all, claims of defeat following Tet lost Viet Nam despite military success. It must be quite frustrating that they cannot force a loss in this conflict too. Where is Uncle Walt when you need him to convince everyone a victory is a defeat?
