Best of the Web wrote the following in response to an article by Jennifer Rubin, contending the press is already preparing excuses for the anticipated Obama loss:
Can it really be true that the Democrats and the media are
concentrating on assigning blame for a defeat that hasn't even happened
yet?
Come to think of it, that was the approach they took to the Iraq war.
Two weeks ago
I wrote the following:
It appears that even those on the left are starting to admit, if only
tacitly, that Obama could lose this election he was once guaranteed to
win. And, as is their wont, the left is already starting to look for
excuses. Apparently realizing they have done the "stolen election"
story to death, they seem to have settled on "racism" as the presumptive excuse,
describing everything from criticisms about his lack of experience to
claims he is too liberal as evidence of covert racism. The right,
meanwhile, seems absolutely puzzled by this change of fortunes. Some
have come up with explanations, McCain's maverick reputation, his
choice of Palin, Obama's politics, all have been trotted out, but not
very forcefully. The right seems just as puzzled as the left by this
outcome.
Even earlier, in late August, I had written that:
However, I now have the first sign that Democrats, other than those crossing over in disgust
at the way Hillary was driven from the race, have recognized that Obama
is likely to lose. Of course, they cannot admit that their man will
lose, they must continue to publicly repeat the party line that Obama
is a sure thing, but I have unmistakable signs that at least some
Democrats are expecting Obama to lose.
And what is this sign? They are preparing excuses.
Then again, to be fair, it is not so much Best of the Web, as
Ms. Rubin who had the same idea I did, writing:
I am not saying Barack Obama is going to lose; I am saying the Obama
Gang of Three (i.e. the mind-melded bloggers/MSM/campaign operation)
now thinks that is a distinct possibility. So how to explain how they
all messed up? When in doubt, revive the Lee Atwater/Karl Rove/Gore v. Bush/Swiftboat rationale which is "It is never our fault."
So, I suppose this one should really read "Jennifer Rubin Imitates Me", but that doesn't have the same ring to it. So, I'll just
keep pretending I scooped the WSJ.
Why tinker with something that works?
