In my last post, I mentioned Morris' contention that McCain lost the debate and rather snidely remarked that I am sure most pundits would go that way. I Personally thought the debate seemed a wash, though I admit I missed the debate itself due to my vacation and was basing my judgment solely on transcripts, summaries and the impressions of others.
However, I have to give some credit to
William Rusher, for presenting a more balanced perspective on the debate. Perhaps it is because his perceptions largely mirror my own second hand impressions, but I have to credit him with avoiding the immediate rush to credit Obama with a win.
And, to be fair, he is the only commentator I have read who mentioned Obama's hewing close to the party line on the topics of the economy and Iraq. This may seem trivial, but in the long run, I think his government spending policy, and especially his cut and run policy on Iraq, will do more harm than any eloquence in a debate will help him.
Of course, the current polls show the post debate, or more accurately, post debate media hype, bounce, but I think once voters realize Obama is still endorsing the cut and run policy, and that his economic agenda is more expensive government programs, such as those that led to this bailout, they will find him a lot less appealing.
So, give it time to sink in. I think the results will surprise many pundits. Though perhaps not Mr. Rusher.
