One Question About "Racism"

I keep hearing Democrats charging that Republicans are sending "coded signals" to racists telling them not to vote for Obama.

Does this make sense to anyone? Would racists vote for a black candidate? Do they need Republicans to remind them not to vote for the black candidate?

It seems to me, that if there is one group certain not to vote for Obama, it would be racists, regardless of what anyone in the campaign does. So would it even make sense to say Republicans are "appealing to racism"?

Now if Obama were white and Republicans were linking him to blacks, that could be argued as an appeal to racism. But since Obama IS BLACK, I think he has pretty much written off the racist vote no matter what Republicans do.

Does anyone even think about what they are saying any more?

POSTSCRIPT

Yes, this argument has been made before, and it is not original to me, but as I continue to see this argument being made, and becoming even more common, I have to ask why no one has thought this through yet.
