Thanks to those who stuck with me through my real time debate coverage. I don't know whether it was a success or failure, that is up to my readers to decide. But I suppose I should put up some final thoughts.
The first thing that comes to mind is how sick I am of hearing this is the greatest crisis since the great depression. That is akin to comparing a stubbed toe to a heart attack. The S&L bailout was at least equal, and the stagflation of the 1970's was far worse.
But that isn't the sort of conclusion I should provide.
I suppose I need more time to really think this through, but my first impression is McCain came off better than Obama. He was firm, he fought back, and he kept a rather cheerful but firm demeanor. He had a rocky start, but hit his stride and ran with it. Obama seemed flustered by the lack of audience feedback, seemed a bit irritated, stuttered some, dodged questions, and often made clumsy returns to a script without answering. Worst of all, I think he bit on a few topics he should have left alone and set up future McCain attacks by making untrue statements.
I am sure the media will disagree, but that's how I see it. (I am convinced they will be telling us McCain was "too angry".)
Thanks again for watching the debate with me. And thanks to my wife for keeping my three year old occupied while I wrote (until he fell asleep.)
I'll be back tomorrow with my usual intemperate opinions.
POSTSCRIPT
One more thought before I go. McCain hit the right topics, that Obama wants to spend, favors intrusive government, and is not trustworthy, though he is slick and talks a fair game. It is a theme he could profitably pursue in the next few weeks. His plan for a spending freeze also seemed to be a good proposal, as it avoids all the confusion and suspect micromanagement Obama proposes, it also doesn't seem quite as open to dishonesty and finagling as Obama's plans.
But have to wait and see. I can't wait to see what others thought.
