Obama is off his game tonight. maybe it is the lack of feedback from the audience. Or maybe it is that McCain is more aggressive than Obama expected.
Obama is not responding well. He seems to be rushing back to a script and not responding tot he actual statements. He is stammering a bit and doing his "we could debate about that..." which he uses to refuse to respond. He seems a bit evasive, and not very self-possessed.
It isn't the best showing I have seen.
POSTSCRIPT
His attempt to respond to charges about Ayers and ACORN are pretty flimsy. He is offering up the defenses his partisans have been using, which is probably a bad idea, as his downplaying can be refuted by documents. He may have set himself up for future problems. By saying his "only contact" with ACORN was a single motor voter case, he has lied. His Ayers response may also contain some falsehoods.
I believe that McCain did well here, it appears he set up a tar baby for Obama and Obama bit.
