I can think of one person who has to be hoping that Al Franken wins his recount or court challenge and ends up in the senate more than anyone else, and it isn't Nevada Harry or even the Windy City Messiah. The person pulling the hardest for Al has to be the old Grand Cyclops himself Senator Robert "Tossing Out the N-Word" Byrd.
Why Senator Sheets, you may ask.
Well, think of it this way. I was thinking that I hopped Al got his seat so that I would no longer feel quite so embarrassed by having Mikulski as my senator. But, if it would make me feel better as a mere constituent of Mikulski's, think what old "Sheets" Byrd would get out of it. Suddenly he would no longer be the biggest embarrassment in the senate, and, as an added bonus, his would no longer be the most rambling, disjointed lectures on the senate floor.
(That last one is very important, as the loss of Biden leaves Sheets the unchallenged holder of the title for most disoriented blowhard of the senate floor. That is unless Al Franken wins, in which case there will be competition once again.)
On the other hand, I think the people most ardently praying for Franken's defeat have to be the few sane voters in Minnesota. They must be thinking to themselves "First Jesse Ventura, then Al Franken? No one will ever take us seriously again. We'll be less respected than DC or Vermont." So, for their sake, as well as the sake of the rest of us, I hope Franken is forced to return to his career as a failed broadcaster.
