Axis of Evil?

Today, while reading the Wall Street Journal web site I came across an interesting report about Chavez's cooperation with Iran, now confirmed with the Turkish seizure of Iranian arms components headed to Venezuela. All of which reminded me of how amusingly obtuse the left can be once they convince themselves a conservative is "overreacting" and "imagining enemies". Perhaps an example would help make that a little more clear.

For years, they mocked Reagan for his "evil empire" speech, calling it simplistic and pretending that the Soviet Union was not "evil" just "another type of government", perhaps even a morally superior one. However, now even the left recognizes that the Soviet Union was the worst form of tyranny, responsible for the deaths of tens of millions and the oppression of hundreds of millions more. And, outside of a few hardcore apologists, we don't even hear the "it was Stalin who ruined it" argument any longer. After a decade or more of Reagan mocking, the left is finally on the verge of admitting he was right.

So, who wants to bet on the date when they will admit Bush was right too? I am not a Bush booster, I have written before on the good and bad of his administration, but there is one thing I cannot endorse, and that is the left wing mockery of his "axis of evil" speech. While the left dismisses it as "simplistic" and "absurd" and "playing to fears". Even many on the right dismiss it as allegorical, and failed to take Bush seriously. But the truth is that nations which oppose America do unite, and have done so for decades. How else to explain past cooperation between, say, Syria and the Soviets? Or China and various third world dictators? Those nations which have common anti-American interests often do form an axis, and I think it fair to say, as most are interested in nothing more than exporting their own flavor of dictatorship, that they form an axis of evil.

Not that the left will admit it any time soon. I am sure for the next decade or two all we will hear will be what a dolt Bush was and how absurd all his claims were. But I foresee a day, sometime, years from now, when they will quietly recognize that Bush had been right all along.
