I am glad to see the US has given up on its "backwards" policy of liberating people from oppressive regimes and is instead turning toward the "sophisticated" European model of assuring dictators we have no intention of supporting freedom or even recognition of basic human rights. Or if we do, it will be merely for show, making brave noises for domestic consumption without any intention of following through.
Case in point, Obama's planned letter to Iran. According to
the Guardian:
State department officials have composed at least three drafts of the
letter, which gives assurances that Washington does not want to
overthrow the Islamic regime, but merely seeks a change in its
behaviour.
Which makes me feel so warm and fuzzy inside, knowing that the US, rather than being a beacon of freedom has returned to the Clinton and Carter era model of being a friend to dictators and a nation willing to repatriate young children into totalitarian oppression.
That
IS change you can believe in!
