Is it just me, or does the current administrtaion seem to send mixed signals?
The Obama administration seems often to subscribe tot he belief of the NIE which claimed that Iran was no longer pursuing nuclear weapons but was only interested in uranium enrichment for peaceful purposes. That would make sense of their willingness to talk to Iran without conditions, and their many efforts to extend an olive branch to Iran.
However, they are now suggesting that they want to talk to Iran about discontinuing their nuclear program. Why? if it is peaceful there is no reason for them to stop. So, such talks would seem to suggest they think Iran is pursuing weapons after all.
But if that is the case, then their most recent statement makes no sense. They say they are willing to allow Iran to continue enriching uranium during the early stages of the talks. Which, if they think Iran is making weapons, is like allowing criminals to continue robbing while awaiting trial.
So, do they think Iran is pursuing weapons or not? If so, then they need to demand concessions before talks, and set conditions on those talks. If not, then there is no need to talk about the nuclear question at all.
Or perhaps there is one other option. They think Iran is pursuing weapons, but they believe in
Obama's mystical charisma, and once ina room alone with the man and his magical words, Iran will simply fold. Not that it worked in Europe, but that does not seem to have shaken their confidence in the magic power of Obama's words.

By the way, for those who claim ending our missile defense program and talking of disarmament is harmless, please note that North Korea has abandoned all concessions and is starting plutonium production once again. Odd how that coincides with our election of another president excessively fond of talk, desperate to make concessions on defense, and willing to give without getting anything in return. It seems our election of James Earl Carter Junior (aka Barack Hussein Obama II) has emboldened at least one nuclear power. I wonder how many other nations are watching North Korea to see if we respond. I have a feeling Taiwan, Georgia, Ukraine, and Poland and equally interested in what we do, though for completely different reasons.
