Looking at the data today on
the Rasmussen polls, as of today (07/10/2009), the numbers do not look good for Obama to continue his agenda.
The Obama administration is seen as "more ethical" by only 38% of voters, and his ethics are considered "good" by only 45%. Only 30% trust his handling of the economic crisis. 70% consider him politically liberal, with 41% thinking his supreme court choices are too liberal. And, despite claims of eventual budget cutting, 73% expect government spending to go up.
This is significant, as it cuts against the conditions which led to his victory in 2008. In that race, he was portrayed as a moderate uniter who could solve problems and restore ethics. These numbers mean the public has come to see him the way Republicans had hoped to portray him in 2008.
That may be an issue in 2010, as the changing perceptions of Obama may make him a liability for congressmen running in 2010. And if he is a liability, that means his congressional support may dry up. As I said in "
Falling Popularity and Vanishing Support", if his numbers fall, he may not be able to pass any of his major initiatives, and certainly won't be able to pass any more bailouts.
Of coruse, those numbers may change just as quickly as they fell, so there is no guarantee this situation will remain true in 2010, but given the lackluster economy, and the rather weak excuses the administrtaion is offering for the failure of the bailout (eg. things are getting worse mroe slowly than they would have without the bailout), I don't think we are going to see these numbers improving anytime soon. My
Carter analogies are looking more and more apt.
Well, I am off to rest again as my hands and feet feel as if something stepped on them. Hopefully I will write again this evening. But for the moment discomfort is overcoming my compulsion to write.
