At one time university special collections were made up of ancient manuscripts, or if not something from antiquity then they were made up of presidential records, legislative records, or maybe the personal journals of major literary figures. Now UC Santa Cruz is seeking a professional librarian for their
Grateful Dead Archive. What's next? The Harvard Beck Collection? Columbia's Fifty Cent Research Library? The Vanilla Ice Collection at Stanford? I know the baby boomers think every bit of cultural tedium related to their brief moment in the sun has inestimable cultural value, but... A Grateful Dead collection? Not only do I wonder if I need to even comment, I am not sure I can comment. Some things just render one speechless.
