I have found what must be either the most pointless joke, or most absurdly unsubstantiated claims on earth. They can be found on
this site, but I will reproduce the bizarre quote here (rather than litter the quote with sics, just note that the writer cannot spell heterosexual):
In short, Avatar has hetrosexual themes, that's why. Not that
hetrosexual themes are anything new in American films but when you
consider the context in which the Avatar story is set, the message of
this film is highly irresponsible.
Here's a summary of what is wrong with the Avatar film:
1)
Avatar assumes that the hetrosexual, "male" and "female" attraction
will still be the primary relationship basis in the future.
2) Avatar ignores the fact of Evolution. Humans are evolving to be being Transgender, NOT hetrosexual.
3) Avatar also assumes that intelligent beings on other worlds would be hetrosexual.
In addition, the film uses militaristic themes and promotes violence as a means of story-telling and social context.
Now, I am no booster of the movie
Avatar. I think it is being over-hyped and that it will probably be mediocre at best. (Cameron tends to go overly maudlin when no one is there to rein him in.) But, these claims are just bizarre. Man is evolving to be genderless? How on earth would that work? Doesn't evolution involve sex? (I won't use "gender" in this silly sociological context - see "
A Question About Language" and "
Oh No, Not Again".)
The same author also posted two bizarre comments on the
IMDB Avatar message board, making me think, despite the fact that it is so absurd I can only imagine it must be a joke, that it was meant to be taken seriously:
1.There would still be a U.S. military in the future?
I certainly hope not. Have we not learned already that war only hurts
people? So many people have been hurt and killed by America's guns and
bombs and I want to see a future where that does not happen. I would
think more progressive nations would be exploring space, not the U.S.
2.Re: There would still be a U.S. military in the future?
Sorry but the Bush Regime is over and I am free to express my views
now. I hope you will discover the inner-truth of your self. Violence is
not the answer.
For now I think I will just post these comments. But this whole theory that man is "evolving beyond gender" and "becoming asexual or transgender" is something I have heard elsewhere put forward as a serious proposition, so I will address it later. It has to be one of the most absurd theses ever, yet some academics and others take it seriously.
