I was reading
a WSJ article about "racial sovereignty" for Hawaiians and the absurd Akaka bill when it struck me there is a simple solution for all those calling for "racial sovereignty" or "home rule" for this or that ethnic enclave. The way it is currently proposed "sovereignty" is a zero-sum game destined to create pressure group politics. By conferring special rights on some ethnic groups at the expense of others, it creates tensions bound to tear apart states, as various ethnicities scramble for special rights.
The simple solution? Individual sovereignty. If the government relinquishes all but the most basic powers and returns sovereignty to the individual, then there will be no reason for any group to ask for sovereignty, as each and every member will have total sovereignty.
Of course this will not please the race mongers, as they seek not sovereignty, but power and special privileges. They do not want freedom from government oppression but the right to force tohers to behave as they wish. Not freedom from oppression but freedom from any criticism or offense.
On the other hand, it may still be worth a try. After all, if we grant total individual sovereignty, the nation will be much better for it, and, when the race mongers continue to cry oppression, it will show their true agenda.
So, in the name of racial harmony, I call for the federal government to relinquish most of its power, to return to a truly federalist system, and for individual states to return the power to the citizens. Anything else will just perpetuate racial divisions.
